There is a Mercedes Service Information Sheet (SI26.00-P-0002A) regarding this scenario dealing with change from ATF transmission oil to MB235.10 transmission oil: Transmissions with a progress number lower than 7 340 241 must not be filled with the new transmission oil if an old rotary shaft lip seal is fitted. I believe the seals may suffer damage if you use wrong oil. Has been running fine for the last 3 weeks.Īnd Tolsen, any idea why they (BeVo) might refer to the 450 fluid as "gearbox oil" and the 451 as "automatic gearbox oil"? "potential" consequences of such an idiotic move? Just a person didn't read thoroughly enough and used Castrol Syntrans Transaxle 75w-90 GL4 in a Smart 450. Using any GL4 75W-90 gear oil is therefore too risky and may cause gearbox failure. The above is a special gear oil and there are at present no compatible gear oil alternatives. Owners of Smart 451 and 454 are less fortunate since only one gear oil is approved by Mercedes: This is a misinterpretation and I have already taken the opportunity to notify Comma accordingly. Somebody may have noticed that Comma specifies an MB 235.10 compatible gear oil for all Smart 450 after 2003.

This is a GM DEXRON II D type transmission oil hence Comma AQM is fully compatible, however not yet approved by Mercedes. There are only two approved gear oils: Esso ATF D 21065 and Mobile ATF D 21065. The references referred to in posts 20, 21 & 22 of this thread apply to Mercedes cars and not to any Smart and therefore not applicable.Ĭorrect transaxle oil for the Smart 450 and 452 is as per specification 235.71 "Gear oils Smart." () I see Evilution has very recently revised the information published on his site regarding gear oil for the 450 and 452 () and that his current advice is to stick with ATF which is a wise advice indeed. Will go for an MB 235.10 compatible gear oil next time, as I don't have any more AQM in stock. Filled transmission with 1.4 litres of fresh AQM bought fifteen years ago. The old AQM transmission oil that I drained out was rather black showing visible signs of metal particles when viewed on a slide in a microscope. Got an explanation on this anomaly at Evilution's excellent site: Allegedly someone cocked it up by spreading misinformation in the early days of the Smart. Strange I thought since there has been no significant change in the design of the Getrag gearboxes used in the Smart. I noticed however that MB 10 75W-80 gear oil compatible with MB 235.10 is specified from gearbox number 7340241. AQM was specified at the time and is still recommended by Comma for transmissions in older Smarts. Have done about 60,000 miles since last transmission oil change so I thought it was time to change transmission oil again.ĭid last change in April 2007 and used Comma AQM, a Dexron II automatic transmission oil.
